PicnicAnnual Picnic will be held on Thursday, August 1 at Bluhm County Park near Westville to share favorite recipes, visit with other members and donate unneeded items for a good cause. The August picnic and auction has been the Association’s annual fundraiser for several years to help fund the Annual Awards dinner in the spring. The Board will supply the main course and members are asked to bring along a salad or dessert to share. Please remember to label everything with ingredients to make it safer for those with food allergies. Dinner will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m.

La Porte County Master Gardener Association Meeting was held on July 11th at the Swanson Senior Center, La Porte. 24 members attended the meeting. Presentations by two of our Master Gardeners, Rima Binder and Dennis Brittain. Rima gave us an in-depth look at orchids. Coupled with her historical facts and photographs, we learned a great deal about the largest flower family that grows almost everywhere. Flowers range in size of 1/4” to 8”, belong to either the terrestrial or epiphyte group, and have been cultivated as prized possessions for centuries. Dennis encouraged us to check out Agroforestry that combines long-living perennial trees that bear fruit and nuts with foraging livestock. He also stressed vertical gardening as a way to have your own vegetable garden in limited space. For information view the Royal Family Decorative Vegetable Gardening site. Business meeting followed the programs.
