LaPorte County Habitat for Humanity has joined #GivingTuesday2017, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. This year's event is on November 28.
Each year, Giving Tuesday is held on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving in the US. It follows shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
"Giving Tuesday kicks off the holiday giving season. It is meant to inspire individuals to collaborate in their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support," said Bob Long, Executive Director of LaPorte County Habitat for Humanity.
LaPorte County Habitat for Humanity builds homes for low to middle income families. Homeowners work alongside volunteers during construction, and pay an affordable mortgage. Since 1986, LaPorte County Habitat has helped 51 families in need of decent, affordable housing.
NEEDS AND BENEFITS
Having a decent place to live can remove a family's barriers to opportunity, success and health that might have existed for generations. Clean, safe, stable housing can lead to improved health, stronger childhood development, and the financial flexibility to make forward-looking choices. Families build equity through paying on an affordable mortgage.
Good housing attracts economic investment and development. Decent shelter contributes to thriving school systems, community organizations and civic activism. Safe homes and neighborhoods help build social stability and security.
STATEWIDE IMPACT
Habitat affiliates across the state of Indiana have helped nearly 5600 families who have accumulated equity and pay more than $5 million in property taxes each year. More than half of Indiana Habitat homeowners report enjoying improved health after moving into their homes. Research has shown that safe, stable housing reduces healthcare costs.
