La Porte County Family YMCA hosts 115th annual State of the Y ceremony

The La Porte County Family YMCA has been a lifetime staple in Northwest Indiana. Between old and new generations, the annual State of the Y ceremony has been a constant tradition that celebrates the organization’s members, partners, and the entire community.

Scott Helmkamp, CEO of the La Porte County Family YMCA, was named the CEO of the organization just two weeks before last year’s State of the Y ceremony. With a full calendar year of experience in this role, he’s been able to build relationships with members and partners who are motivated to help them.

“In the past year, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to get out into the community to connect with members, donors, and businesses,” Helmkamp said. “I think it’s really paid off in terms of being able to share all the great things that are happening here. We spent time focusing on the value of a YMCA membership and adding more programs. We’ve had a Kid’s Night Out, Taylor Swift theme night, and a few other activities that impact the family unit.”

The State of the Y event has been one of the longest-standing traditions in the Region. As the organization celebrates the 115th annual ceremony, Helmkamp has a strong appreciation for how the organization has been an important facility for several generations.

“It motivates us to continue this tradition for 115 years and counting,” Helmkamp said. “Back when we first started this, the YMCA wasn’t about treadmills or exercise. It’s our mission to continue moving forward with the YMCA being not a community center, but the center of community.”

This event serves as a way for the La Porte County Family YMCA to share appreciation for their staff, volunteers, and partners.

“We’ll be presenting the Youth Volunteer of the Year, Adult Volunteer of the Year, Community Partner Award and recognizing some of our board of directors,” Helmkamp said. “It’s important for us to recognize the people who contribute to helping the YMCA improve by the day.”

This year’s community engagement award went to Horizon Bank for its dedicated support and the opportunities it provide for the La Porte County Family YMCA. Luci Zarantonello received the Teen Volunteer of the Year award, and Carl Savich received the Adult Volunteer of the Year award.

“I’m so pleased to be associated with Dot in this way,” Savich said. “It’s fulfilling to be a part of this community and we should always be mindful to look to the needs of others ahead of ourselves.”

Matt Cook and Michael Riehle, members of the Board of Directors, were both recognized for their dedicated services to the La Porte County Family YMCA. Their assistance with supporting the programs of the organizations has helped ensure a strong future.

One of the programs that has the same objectives is the annual fundraising campaign for the La Porte County Family YMCA. The goal for this year’s campaign will be to raise $125,000 that will go to support the organization’s financial assistance program.

“As a nonprofit organization, we rely on community support through donations and the support of our annual campaign,” Helmkamp said. “We provide scholarships and financial assistance in order to participate in swim lessons or help families with summer enrollment fees.”

Following the award presentations, the La Porte County Family YMCA introduced its newest board members. Brian Larson, a board member, closed the ceremony with a warm message to everyone in attendance.

“I’m thankful for everyone who came out today and shared in the YMCA’s potential, vision and action,” Larson said. “We hope that people will continue to take action in supporting our vision and providing donations throughout the year.”

Helmkamp and Jessica Romine, board president, surprised La Porte Mayor Tom Dermody at the event with a shirt to show their appreciation for his contributions to assisting the La Porte County Family YMCA.

The strategic plan moving forward with the La Porte County Family YMCA is focused on pursuing health outcomes, creating a magnetic culture, and positioning the organization for growth. The organization plans to continue partnering with local entities to push forward and assist with issues such as chronic disease prevention and self-monitoring mental health. Creating a culture where everybody feels welcome is the most important quality that the La Porte County Family YMCA has carried out for 115 years. The ultimate goal is to continue making this impact for 115 more.
