For the second time, La Porte Hospital and the Y are partnering to ensure every child in our community has access to programs that promote health and well-being. Through a generous donation of $5,000, La Porte Hospital has made funding available for scholarships for youth swimming and sports programs offered through the Y’s La Porte branch during the spring and summer of 2018. Eligible programs include swim lessons for children of all ages, soccer, T-ball, cross country and taekwondo.
“Access to affordable fitness and healthy family activities is something that La Porte Hospital considers to be a key component of building strong, vibrant communities. We are so pleased to be working with the La Porte County Family YMCA to open up opportunities for our community members to experience the exceptional programming that our local Y offers,” said Stacey Kellogg, regional manager of community relations for La Porte Hospital.
“One of the best parts about working together on the Healthiest Summer Ever program is that it encourages families to explore opportunities at the YMCA that they might not have considered otherwise," says Kellogg. "When a child engages with the YMCA, they are participating in the kinds of activities that build strong, healthy bodies, and they are partaking in a positive social outlet that helps shape them to become strong, healthy citizens as well."
"We are very grateful to La Porte Hospital for their continued partnership and support," says Cindy Berchem, CEO of the La Porte County Family YMCA. "Our Y Scholarship Fund is a critical part of our work to remove barriers and ensure all kids in our community have the opportunity to get active and develop healthy habits in a fun, friendly environment." The Y estimates that this gift will allow it to provide approximately 200 scholarships for youth swimming and sports programs.
Scholarships are available to both Y members and non-members. Families interested in participating in the Healthiest Summer Ever scholarship program can pick up a scholarship application at the Member Services desk of the La Porte Branch or contact Michelle Shirk, Development Director at mshirk@lpymca.org or (219) 325-9622 for additional information.
