La Lumiere School’s Seventh Annual Service Trip to Nicaragua

2013-Nicaragua-tripFor many, spring break is an opportunity to travel south for a little sun and fun. For a seventh consecutive year, a group of La Lumiere students chose to head a little further south, to Nicaragua, on a service trip to assist the Fabretto Children’s Foundation.

The Fabretto Children’s Foundation enables impoverished Nicaraguan children and their families to break the cycle of poverty and reach their full potential through programs promoting education, nutrition, health, and community development. In a country where almost half of the population lives on less than a $1 a day, and 80% live on less than $2, Fabretto provides a beacon of light for those in need.

While in Nicaragua, the La Lumiere students focused their efforts on building three different projects: an aqueduct to bring water to the school, a fence to encircle a school, and a garden for continued crop production.

The La Lumiere student body currently funds scholarships for three students at Fabretto. The volunteers had an opportunity to meet the scholarship students and walked away determined to do more. La Lumiere plans to continue the partnership with the Fabretto Children’s Foundation by raising funds for scholarships and continuing its annual service trip to the region.
