La Lumiere School’s Class of 2013 Addressed by Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr. at Commencement Exercises

La-Lumiere-Graduation-2013Sixty-two graduates walked across the stage Friday, May 24 at La Lumiere’s 46th Commencement Exercises, representing the largest graduating class in the School’s history. In celebration of the School’s 50th Anniversary, the School’s most illustrious alumnus, Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., Class of 1973, delivered an inspirational keynote address to over 1,000 parents, students, alumni and guests.

When introducing Chief Justice Roberts, Headmaster Michael Kennedy ’86 shared, “We are trying to pretend just a little bit that this is an ordinary graduation day here at La Lumiere. But we might as well just admit that our speaker this year is exceptional – at least by one measure: We don’t have the admissions essay for every La Lumiere alumnus on display under a glass-enclosed case in the Library. I’m referring to the essay in which the 8th grader John Roberts wrote – presciently: ‘La Lumiere will force me to work as hard as I can…. I won't be content to get a good job by getting a good education. I want to get the best job by getting the best education.’"

In his remarks to the graduates, Chief Justice John Roberts wisely counseled that disappointment awaits them, but that “How you respond will determine what kind of life you lead. You will succeed if you resolutely determine not to fail.”

Kathryn Knight, 2013 graduate from Beverly Shores and Head Prefect, reflected on the impact of a La Lumiere education: “La Lumiere has equipped us to be successful in our future, and has provided the necessary tools for us to do so. Whether we journey on to be a world-renowned neurological surgeon, continue the family business, or become the next Chief Justice, La Lumiere will always be our connection and the first stop on our voyage forward.

The Class of 2013 earned over $3 million in scholarship monies and is headed to some of the finest higher educational institutions across the country.
