La Lumiere School is Accessible and Affordable

la-lumiere-schoolFor nearly half a century, La Lumiere School has provided students an accessible and affordable education that is challenging and rewarding. And while its 200 students come from around the world, most live in its backyard in La Porte County, Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan.

Even during a difficult economic climate parents are making the sacrifice so their children receive a rigorous education. Mark Mitchell, a vice president with the National Association of Independent Schools in Washington, D.C., admits the economy has created "affordability strains" for schools like La Lumiere, but they are meeting the challenge.

"Schools' number one priority in times like these is to extend as much support as possible to families in order to keep the independent school option a reality for new and current students," said Mitchell in an interview with Forbes magazine.

"Last year, NAIS member schools spent over $1 billion in need-based financial aid," said Mitchell. "While we acknowledge that independent school tuition may seem out of reach for some, it doesn't serve the school, the family, or the child well to disregard the independent school option simply because of the price tag."

La Lumiere recognizes that need and works with families to overcome concerns they may have about affordability. To that end, the school is encouraging ninth-grade applicants to take the La Lumiere Entrance Exam on Saturday morning, January 19, 2013 in order to be considered for merit scholarships to La Lumiere. Qualifying students are eligible for scholarships through the Unity Foundation of La Porte County for amounts from $500 to half tuition. Additionally, La Lumiere provides need-based financial assistance to families utilizing a third-party assessment tool. To register for the Entrance Exam call 219.326.7450.
