La Lumiere School Expands Areas of Excellence Strategy

La-Lumiere-SchoolLa Lumiere School is pleased to announce new program offerings for the 2013-2014 school year and beyond. La Lumiere’s recent efforts to develop their Areas of Excellence strategy have led to the hiring of several excellent new faculty members and helped to once again achieve record enrollment.

In its third year, The Areas of Excellence strategy is designed to provide an intensive educational experience for our students in critical subjects – reinforcing an unparalleled college preparatory program.

One of the areas of focus is the School’s 21st Century Math and Science Program. This year the School completes the three year rollout of its Environmental Studies program by adding AP Environmental Science to the curriculum. This means that in the last three years La Lumiere has developed six new classes under the umbrella of the Environmental Sciences. Since 1993 the School has competed in the State Finals of Science Olympiad demonstrating the strength of our science programs. In addition, La Lumiere is expanding its math classes to include AP Statistics and AP Computer Programming, rounding-out the 12 rigorous math course offerings that prepare our students for college.

The Global Studies Initiative is another area of excellence. As a school with a boarding component, La Lumiere is uniquely positioned to offer a fully developed global studies program. The School will add AP Comparative Government and AP United States Government in an effort to encourage high level study of international relations and important global issues. Finally, the School expands its foreign language offerings by adding a first year Chinese course. An additional level of Chinese will be added each year through the honors levels. This year, La Lumiere opens its English Language Institute for those studying English as a Second language. The English Language Institute will include extra help and support for international students as well as summer immersion experiences.

In the Arts Department, La Lumiere will add chorus and jazz band opportunities to the curriculum. In addition, individual voice and guitar lessons will be offered and some small chamber ensembles will be formed.

Augmenting an already robust curriculum with the Areas of Excellence strategy will allow La Lumiere to continue to provide its students with both the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully navigate an increasingly competitive and interconnected world.
