La Lumiere Crew Team Qualifies for National Scholastic Rowing Championships

La-Lumiere-Crew-Team-National-Scholastic-Rowing-Championships-2016La Lumiere School’s women’s junior quad crew team, including sophomore Meghan Daly of La Porte, Ind., junior Amelia Murphy of La Porte, Ind., junior Channing Scott of Granger, Ind., and junior Sarah Van Sessen of Westville, Ind., brought home a silver medal from the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championships earlier this month. This achievement qualifies the Lady Lakers to compete in the SRAA National Championships Regatta on Dillon Lake in Nashport, Ohio on May 27 and 28. This is the second year in a row that the team has qualified for nationals.

Daly, Murphy, Scott, and Van Sessen will compete against top boats from New York, Florida, New Jersey, Virginia, and Pennsylvania for the championship honors. Alternates for this event are sophomore Caroline Bates of Porter, Ind. and freshman Haley Harkness of Valparaiso, Ind.

The La Lumiere crew team is co-ed and led by veteran coach, Kevin Spingler, who has more than 30 years of coaching experience, and Alyssa Trelstad, a former member of the University of Minnesota’s NCAA Division I crew team. The School began its crew program in 2012 with 17 rowers and seven shells (boats), and it has grown to more than 25 team members and 15 shells. Laker rowers have the benefit of rowing during both the fall and spring athletic seasons, and enjoy practicing on the School’s own spring-fed lake, Lake La Lumiere.
