Krueger Middle School Students Plant Trees

Schroll-Environmental-Tech-Plant-Trees-CollageStudents from Brian Schroll's Environmental Tech class at Krueger Middle School planted three trees along the front drive to the school on Monday, November 10th. The tree planting was timed to commemorate Arbor Day. According to Michigan City Forester Frank Seilheimer, although Arbor Day is in April, cities across the U.S. can observe it whenever they choose. "Planting trees in the fall is ideal," Seilheimer says. "The tree will 'wake up' in its new spot in the spring, without the worry of summer watering. You can plant trees anytime up until the ground freezes."

Students planted three trees native to our area, including Buckeye, Bitternut Hickory, and American Chestnut. The chestnut is a hybrid, resistant to blight. The trees came from an Illinois nursery, Possibility Place - which harvests seeds from LaPorte County parks.
