Six Joy Elementary School students were given the royal treatment on Monday, April 10 -- enjoying a limo ride to a special lunch at Culver’s as a reward for their achievements in the school’s “Read-A-Thon” last month.
The Read-A-Thon took place Wednesday, March 13 through Wednesday, March 22. Students participated by logging minutes spent reading at home, raising funds through pledges for minutes they read, or both.
The school’s top reader was Justice Hansen, who logged 2,400 minutes (40 hours!) of reading outside of school in just one week. Bailey Chavis also received top honors for reading minutes, and Audrey Poston and Alex Mota Lopez were the top fundraisers. Two additional students who took part in the Read-A-Thon, Connor Vanderberg and Lance Payne, were winners of a random drawing and got to join in on the limo ride and lunch, as well.
The limo service was funded through donations by Epic Limo and Horizon Bank, and Culver’s provided both lunch and gifts for the honored readers. Many other local sponsors donated prizes that were awarded to more students who took part in the Read-A-Thon, which was organized by Joy Curriculum Coach Shannon Chavis.
Funds raised through the reading pledges will be used to purchase t-shirts for all students at Joy, which will be worn for the school’s field day celebration later this Spring.
