Tuesday, January 10, the La Porte County Indiana Genealogical Society members enjoyed an exchange of experiences and discoveries. An evening of sharing let us join in newly uncovered insights into the lives our ancestors. With a theme of “How Did Winter Weather affect our ancestors’ lives?”, each speaker had something of value to offer. From ancestors who farmed in the summer and harvested pine lumber in the winter to medical emergencies caused by bitter cold to farmers who could harvest and store their own ice, members shared tales of the hardy folks of earlier days. Some actually shared the memories from their childhood, when rural homes lacked electricity and central heating.
Next month’s meeting, on February 14, will feature Carol Lloyd. She will present Exploring Genealogy through Hellinger Family Systemic Work. Carol will share her understanding of the theories of Bert Hellinger, respected psychotherapist, who examines the effect of past family history on present family dynamics.
The society meets at 7 pm on the second Tuesday of each month, weather permitting, at the La Porte City Parks and Recreation Department building at 250 Pine Lake Avenue. The public is welcome at all meetings. Paricia Harris, trip chairman, announced that the annual bus trip to the Allen County Public Library will be on March 19 this year. Look on the website for details and a reservation blank. She noted the support of the Michigan City Public Library in this undertaking.
