Ivy Tech takes evidence-based approach to new class schedule

Eight weeks is only two months, but it’s also the length of time that you can get a college credit for many classes at Ivy Tech Community College. The new class length format, a change from 16-weeks to 8-weeks, was announced to feature a more efficient way for students to earn credits at Ivy Tech.

The number of classes taught in this 8-week format is the highest in Ivy Tech history. The new system allows students to attend school at their own pace, but also earn credits quicker, as working adults may not have the time to attend classes for 16 weeks.

Nicole Doctor is an Associate Professor at Ivy Tech and has seen some of the benefits to the program.

“Students can focus on fewer courses at any given time, while still graduating on time or sooner than expected.  Research has shown that 8-week courses have a greater pass rate overall than the standard 16-week courses,” Doctor said.

Doctor and Ivy Tech have conducted surveys to see feedback from the 8-week format.

Across the state of Indiana, Ivy Tech has introduced the new 8-week format to begin in March and will be an available choice for more than half of the classes they offer. This allows enrollment in classes at five different times, which is efficient for people who need to do so quickly.

This will also encourage more people to get a college education, even during adulthood, while allowing them to achieve their goals in a manner better suited to their personal lives.

Doctor and Ivy Tech have conducted surveys to see feedback from the 8-week format.

Some student responses were:

“I love the 8- week classes… I can attend a full 15-18 credit hours, and only be taking 2-3 classes at a time,” and “Personally, this was my first time experiencing an 8-week course and I absolutely love it. I feel it allows for a lighter workload. Even though the amount of time to learn may be shortened, there are less classes, assignments, and exams to have to focus on at once.”
