Invasive Species in the Great Lakes

Sooper-Yooper-2013-1On Thursday, November 7, Biology 1 students were able to attend a presentation on invasive species in the Great Lakes in the MCHS auditorium. The presentation was given by Mark Newman who is the author of two books concerning invasive species in the Great Lakes- Sooper Yooper: Environmental Defender and Sooper Yooper: The Quest of the Blue Crew.

Sooper-Yooper-2013-2The Sooper Yooper presentation is aimed to educate students about the importance of protecting our natural resources and the state of invasive species in the Great Lakes. The students were taught the history of Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes, the process of writing both books, and about invasive species such as sea lamprey, rusty crayfish, zebra mussels, purple loosestrife, round goby, water milfoil, and many others. Students were able to see preserved specimens that were brought in by Newman.

This is the 4th year that the Sooper Yooper has presented at MCHS. If you are interested in learning more about invasive species and the Sooper Yooper books please visit the website www.sooperyooper.com.
