Indiana State Police and the Michigan City Police Department Announce Changes to the Handgun Permit Process

Michigan-City-PoliceThe Michigan City Police Department is announcing that changes have been made to the hand gun permit process due to recent implementation by the Indiana State Police. Effective Tuesday 3-26-13, the Michigan City Police Department will no longer fingerprint applicants, as had been the past practice.

Those interested in obtaining an application must do so on-line via the Indiana State Police website, which is located at www.in.gov/isp or at the Michigan City Police Department website at www.michigancitypolice.com.

Applicants will then need to schedule an appointment for fingerprinting which must be done at an INKless (Indiana’s Electronic Fingerprinting Network) fingerprinting service.

This service can be scheduled on-line by returning to the State Police website and on the left side of the homepage, click the menu for “INKless Fingerprinting”.

In La Porte County, applicants can schedule an appointment at a MorphoTrust USA, which is located in the Holiday Inn Express meeting room (400 East Shore Court, La Porte). MorphoTrust USA fingerprinting is a State contracted company that provides the service on Thursdays between 10am and 4pm. The cost of the service is $9.95 per applicant. In addition, MorphoTrust will collect all State permit fees which must be in the form of a money order and made out to the State of Indiana.

Upon completion of these two steps, the applicant must report to the agency that has primary law enforcement jurisdiction of their place of residence.

As a reminder, the fees for handgun permits are as follow:

Type of Permit State Fee (Money Order) Local Fee (Money Order)
Personal Protection (4 year) $39.95 $10.00
Personal Protection (Lifetime) $75.95 $50.00
Personal Protection (Lifetime with current permit) $60.95 $40.00

Gun permit applications will continue to be processed by the Michigan City Police Department on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 8am-3:30pm.
