Indiana State Police and the Michigan City Police Department Announce Changes to the Handgun Permit Process

michigan-city-policeThe Michigan City Police Department is announcing that changes have been made to the hand gun permit process due to recent implementation by the Indiana State Police.

Those interested in obtaining an application must do so on-line via the Indiana State Police website, which is located at www.in.gov/isp or at the Michigan City Police Department website at www.michigancitypolice.com.

Michigan City residents who do not have access to a computer can be assisted by our Records Division Staff.

The applicant must be a resident within the corporate limits of the City of Michigan City. Handgun renewals may not be applied for more than 365 days (one year) prior to the expiration of your current license.

Applicants will then need to schedule an appointment for fingerprinting which must be done at an INKless (Indiana’s Electronic Fingerprinting Network) fingerprinting service. This service can be scheduled on-line by returning to the State Police website and on the left side of the homepage seek the menu for “INKless Fingerprinting” or by calling (877) 472-6917. In La Porte County, applicants can schedule an appointment at a MorphoTrust USA, which is located in the Holiday Inn Express meeting room (400 East Shore Court, La Porte). MorphoTrust USA fingerprinting is an Indiana State contracted company that provides the service on Thursdays between 10am and 4pm. To allow for more convenience, the Holiday Inn Express in Portage (2323 Willow Creek Road), also accepts appointments on Monday’s and Wednesday’s. The cost of the service is $11.95 per applicant and this must be paid by check or money order. Unfortunately, previous fingerprints cannot be used.

There has also been some changes in the State Fees depending on how they are collected. See the following for a reminder.
