Immersive Summer Experience Prepares First-Generation Students for Success

First-generation, underrepresented students often face obstacles that may make it more challenging to pursue higher education. The Groups Scholar Program at Indiana University South Bend is intended to break down those barriers by supporting these students with academic, financial, and social resources to help them earn bachelor’s degrees.

This year’s cohort of Groups Scholars at IU South Bend recently completed an immersive five-week summer program to prepare them to succeed as they begin their college journeys, while also getting a jump start on earning college credit and scholarships.

“I loved meeting new people and getting to know the resources on campus. I am a first-generation student, so I didn’t know anything about college life,” said Dave Toliver, a Groups Scholar from Mishawaka. “This program opened my eyes, and I got a good look at things before college.”

The Groups Scholar Summer Experience Program included taking a course on the history of the Black and Chicano civil rights movements taught by history professors Monica Tetzlaff and Hayley Froysland.

“The idea was to help incoming students get ready for college and get a sense of belonging,” said Tetzlaff. “We want them to come into fall with a lot of confidence knowing their way around campus, and also knowing that we are there for them.”

“This summer class helps with a transition to college and gives them an introduction to what college work may be like, that it’s more intensive than high school classes,” explained Froysland.

In addition to taking a summer course, the Groups Scholars participated in a variety of community building and college preparation activities. The cohort took a field trip with the Civil Rights Heritage Center, which gave them the opportunity to see key locations that have shaped the civil rights movement in the local community.

Other activities included workshops with tips for planning their study schedules and learning about campus resources to help them succeed. They also took part in fun team building with a scavenger hunt and a field day to encourage students to get to know each other and instill a feeling of community.

“My favorite part of the program was having the opportunity to connect with those around me, and make friends before we even start college,” said Ziah Harris, a Groups Scholar from Elkhart.

After completing the Summer Experience, the Groups Scholars have the tools and motivation they need to achieve their goals during their pivotal first year of college.

“They’ve consistently met with us, ensuring they’re on track. It took a few weeks, but it’s been amazing to see their growth—now they’re ready to confidently tackle the school year!” said Jenny Gonzalez, 21st Century Scholar Success Specialist.
