One of the questions we are asked most often is "how long do you keep dogs?"
Here is a story. Artie and Athena were given up to the shelter on the 13th of November. Their owner didn't have time for them. Beautiful shepherd-husky mixes, this pair were tightly bonded to each other and we worked to find one home for them to share.
And worked. And worked.
Unfortunately, Athena proved to be heartworm positive complicating the search. We reached out to rescues. We featured them on our Facebook page. We discussed their fate. Where was their quality of life?
But then a woman came forward who had room in her home and her heart for two big dogs. We would meet her halfway on the cost of heartworm treatment, and halfway between home and the shelter to transfer the dogs to her.
So finally last Saturday, 77 days after they arrived at the shelter, Artie and Athena left for a new home, hopefully happily ever after!
How long do we keep dogs, you ask? As long as it takes.
