People come to the Y for many different reasons. Some join simply to swim or play basketball, while others use it as a place to socialize or find a sense of belonging. We open our doors to everyone, and believe in making all who walk through those doors feel welcome.
Nathan is a 12 year-old boy with Tourette syndrome. At school, it can be hard for him to make new friends because there is not much free time and he feels like he may be judged or looked at differently from other kids.
Fortunately, Nathan grew up in the Y, and believes that participating in sports and open gym helped him learn to socialize with others and feel accepted. He considers the Y to be a place where he can feel safe and meet other kids. He sees coming to the Y as an opportunity to make new friends, spend time with old friends, and feel like he is the same as everyone else. Nathan is happy there is a Y in his community, and we at the Y are happy to have Nathan as a part of our community!
We're working to build a better La Porte County and we need your help! Please donate to this year's annual campaign, which helps us ensure that important Y programs remain accessible to everyone in our community. Give online at https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/LPYMCA, or by texting LPYMCA to 71777.
