HealthLinc 340B program helps patients afford medications

In keeping with its mission to improve communities by expanding access to exceptional healthcare, HealthLinc participates in the federal 340B program that enables the HealthLinc pharmacies to provide deep discounts on certain prescribed drugs, helping patients sustain access to the medications they need to treat their acute and chronic conditions.

The 340B discount program was created by the federal government in 1992 and requires drug manufacturers to provide outpatient drugs to eligible health care organizations like HealthLinc at reduced pricing.

The program is complex to manage and requires diligent upkeep from a regulatory standpoint on the HealthLinc side, but staff there maintain it’s the right thing to do for patients.

“We know the cost of prescription drugs can be a significant barrier for many of our patients. For some of them, missing even one dose of certain medications can result in dangerous health consequences and possibly expensive hospital visits,” said Beth Wrobel, HealthLinc CEO. “By participating in the 340B program, we are able to pass discount savings on to qualifying patients and help them stay healthy.”

Certain medications are eligible for 340B pricing discounts, including but not limited to inhalers, insulin, EpiPens, diabetes medications, blood thinners, and depression or anxiety medications.

Chronic conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), severe allergies, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other heart conditions, and depression or anxiety are all conditions that, when not properly managed, can have life-threatening consequences.
