Harmony House Offers Supervised Visitation and Safe Exchange Site in Michigan City

Harmony-House-CASAMay is Supervised Visitation Awareness Month and Harmony House has been using this month to bring awareness to the services offered in La Porte at 1005 Michigan Avenue and now in Michigan City on the 7th Floor of the Marquette Mall Building.

On May 20th, Chili's hosted a Give Back Event that helped raise funds for additional playground equipment and interactive games. On May 29th, Harmony House hosted a luncheon for the Department of Child Service staff and attorneys to showcase the new visitation site that will provide non-custodial parents easier access to visitations and safe exchanges in Michigan City.

Karen Biernacki, CEO of Family Advocates (parent agency of Harmony House), says, "We are proud that Harmony House will be providing additional space in La Porte County that will allow children to maintain a relationship with both of their parents in a safe, homelike setting. The needs of the child and both the custodial and non-custodial parent are imperative in ensuring a visit and exchange creates an atmosphere that facilitates the parent/child relationship."

Supervised visitation or safe exchanges are services that can help families as they go through difficult and/or transitional times. For the children, the relationship with both parents is maintained. For the custodial parent, arrangements can be made by a neutral party and there does not have to be contact before, during, or after a visit. For the non-custodial parent, contact with the child does not have to be interrupted regardless of any personal problems you may be having with the custodial parent.
