Handley Herald: October 2015

12th-Tailgate-Party-1It is hard to believe that we will be wrapping up the first grading period in just a couple of weeks. Please know that report cards will be given at Parent/Teacher conferences. Paperwork regarding scheduling the meetings should have been returned to school today. Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22.

This is a great opportunity to evaluate how your child is progressing, talk with the teacher about your child’s strengths and weaknesses, and discuss strategies to help your child be successful.

On Friday, Oct. 9, you will receive a letter notifying you of your child’s conference date and time. If you are unable to attend, please call the school and reschedule as we our goal is to meet with 100% of the parents/guardians. This is a great time to register for PARENT ACCESS if you don’t already have it. This will give you access to your child’s grades and attendance. Let the office know if you need assistance with getting a password.

Please be sure to visit the Handley School website at http://www.lpcsc.k12.in.us/handley for upcoming important dates and events.

PARENT TIP: Celebrate Progress
It is fun to keep track of your successes throughout the year. Help your child create a SUCCESS TIME CAPSULE for the 2015-16 school year. Suggest that your child create a fun reminder of all the things he/she has accomplished. Let your child cover a container with construction paper and label it “I DID IT!” Then, he/she can write each success (“I memorized my times tables.” “I got an A on my spelling test.” “I met my AR goal.” ) on a slip of paper and put it in the container. If he/she is feeling discouraged or just needs to celebrate, have him/her read the slips and CELBRATE SUCCESS!

ATTENDANCE
Being in school every day means your child won’t miss out on learning. Try to schedule appointments and family trips outside of school hours. If your child asks to stay home “just because,” remind him of what he will miss, such as reading group or art class. Explain that he can be absent only if he is sick or there is a family emergency. This will teach your child a good work ethic which will come in handy in the future. If it is necessary for your child to miss school, please call the office at 362-2561 before 9:00 a.m. Thank you for your support and encouragement with encouraging good attendance.

Little things can make a BIG difference
As part of Handley’s Service Learning Projects, the 3rd graders are collecting pop tabs for the ENTIRE school year. The pop tabs will be donated to Ronald McDonald Houses. These tabs are recycled and the money raised benefits the Ronald McDonald families. Please mention to friends, relatives, and anyone that wants to help this great cause.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Wed., Oct. 21 and Thur., Oct. 22. You will receive a notice with your date and time on Fri., Oct. 9. Reminder: NO SCHOOL for students on Thur., Oct. 22, and Fri., Oct. 23.

CHILDREN’S SYMPHONY CONCERT:
Students in grades 3-5 will be attending a special performance at the Civic Auditorium on Wed., Oct. 14, at 12:45. The Symphony is asking for a $1 donation. Please be sure you returned the permission slip and sent in the $1 donation in order for your child to benefit from this experience.

Please join us on Thursday, October 15, at LaPorte High School from 6:00-7:00 p.m. for an evening of fun and games. There will be food and drinks for sale along with prizes for our BINGO winners. Come in costume and be prepared for SPOOKTACULAR time.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
Handley PTO collects Box Tops. These box tops are turned in and the school receives money for them. This is an easy way to help bring programs, technology, and supplies to your child and the school. Let family members and neighbors know to collect them, too. Please check the expiration date.

HOMECOMING TAIL-GATE PARTY:
The LaPorte Educational Development Foundation is hosting its annual Homecoming Tail-Gate Party Friday, Oct. 9, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Handley parking lot. Come share in the fun with your friends and family before cheering on the Slicer football team!! Funds raised from this event are used to provide grants for classroom teachers in LaPorte schools. Special events include face painting, games, a visit from LPHS cheerleaders and Homecoming candidates and the dunk tank! Come join the fun! Tickets available in the office – Advance purchase: $5 for a brat or hamburger dinner; $6 the night of the event.

GRANDPARENTS’ DAY & BOOK FAIR
On Thursday, Oct. 8, from 7:30-8:15 a.m., grandparents/special friends are invited to visit Handley School for a special day in their honor! Doughnuts and drinks will be served in the cafeteria.. The students will give their grandparent(s) a tour of the classroom, enjoy treats, and visit the Scholastic Book Fair. This is a great opportunity for grandparents to stress the importance of school and reading by learning more about their grandchild’s school and class.

All students and parents are invited for our book fair celebration. You are invited to come to school from 7:30-8:15, on Tues., Oct 6th for a special opportunity to browse and enjoy muffins and a drink. Remember, the book fair is also open from 3:00-3:30 Oct. 5-Oct. 9. If you are unable to attend, orders can be placed online 24 hours a day. Use the link below: Scholastic.com/fair
