Handley Herald: March 1, 2013

Handley-Elementary-SchoolWELCOME, MARCH!! March will be a busy month at Handley School. It will bring mandatory state testing for students in grades 3-5, the end of grading period 3 and the start of our final grading period for the 2012-13 school year, and hopefully some spring like weather. I would like to THANK YOU in advance for making sure your child is prepared for the upcoming testing. This includes being in attendance, getting a good night’s sleep, eating a healthy breakfast, and giving their best effort. Thank you for working together to make Handley School a GREAT PLACE TO BE!!

CHANGE IN MORNING ROUTINE --IMPORTANT:
Breakfast for non-bus students is at 8:15 a.m. We ask that non-bus students arrive at 8:15 promptly. This will allow all students to have enough time and space to enjoy their breakfast. THANK YOU!

OFFICE HOURS:
The school office is open when school is in-session from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Mrs. McLennan and I are available to answer questions and assist guardians, parents, and students.

ADOPT A COP:
Handley School is participating in the “Adopt A Cop” program. We are fortunate to be working cooperatively with the LaPorte City Police. Officer Schoof will occasionally be visiting our building. He may walk the hallways, greet students at the door, join the students for breakfast, lunch, or recess. This is a great opportunity for students to interact positively with a local police officer.

IREAD3
In March of 2010, the Indiana General Assembly passed Public Law 109 requiring the evaluation of reading skills for ALL 3rd grade students. This law was developed to ensure that students can read at grade level prior to beginning 4th grade. Research indicates that from Kindergarten through grade three, students are “learning to read.” However, beginning in 4th grade, students are “reading to learn.” In response to this legislation, 3rd graders will take the Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD-3) Assessment. The test will be given on March 18-20. The Indiana Department of Education created an item sampler with examples of the types of test questions that may appear on the test. You can download the sampler by using the following link: www.doe.in.gov/assesssment/iread_resources.html

ISTEP+
The ISTEP+ test will be given to 3rd – 5th graders March 4-13 and April 29-May 10. Please keep in mind that attendance is EXTREMELY important in order for your child to learn and practice skills/standards that are being taught in preparation of these tests.

DRESS FOR RECESS
As the winter weather approaches, please be sure your child is dressed for the colder weather. Students will go outside (whenever the temperature allows) during the winter months. Please be sure children have coats, hats, and gloves (snowpants and boots if they want to play in the snow). Students are not allowed to stay inside unless there is an official note from the doctor. Therefore, please be sure that students are dress for the weather conditions.

PTA NEWS
The next PTA meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 5, at 3:30 p.m. in the library. Please join us; it’s a great way to meet other Handley parents and get involved.
