Handley Herald: February 1, 2013

Handley-Elementary-SchoolWELCOME, FEBRUARY!!
The students and teachers at Handley School have been working hard and setting goals for great accomplishments as we are now in the second half of the school year. The second half of the year we will be busy preparing for standardized tests -- ISTEP+ for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade; IREAD3 for 3rd grade; mCLASS (K-2), and STAR testing (1-5). We want to thank all of you for your support at home. Encouraging your child to study vocabulary, spelling, math facts, and reading together are great ways to show your child that school is important. Working together we can achieve great things!! THANK YOU! Also, attendance is crucial as teachers are working with students to ensure students are prepared. Research shows that good attendance is an important factor in school success. Please encourage your child to be at school every day.

CHANGE IN MORNING ROUTINE --IMPORTANT:
Breakfast for non-bus students is at 8:15 a.m. We ask that non-bus students arrive at 8:15 promptly. This will allow all students to have enough time and space to enjoy their breakfast. THANK YOU!

OFFICE HOURS:
The school office is open when school is in-session from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Mrs. McLennan and I are available to answer questions and assist guardians, parents, and students.

TREATS IN THE CLASSROOM:
Based on a recommendation from the Wellness Committee, the School Board has adopted the following policy: “For the safety of all children, all treats furnished for students, including birthday treats, must be commercially purchased. These treats should be kept simple and in a form that is easy to pass out to students in the class.” Please keep this in mind when planning treats for Valentine’s Day parties. Thank you!

IREAD3 – 3rd grade students will be required to take and pass the IREAD3 test this school year. This test is given to ensure that students can read at grade level prior to the 4th grade. The test window is March 18-20. More information, including test samples can be found at www.doe.in.gov/assesssment/iread_resources.html

ISTEP+ - The ISTEP+ test will be given to 3rd – 5th graders March 4-13 and April 29-May 10. Please keep in mind that attendance is EXTREMELY important in order for your child to learn and practice skills/standards that are being taught in preparation of these tests.

DRESS FOR RECESS
As the winter weather approaches, please be sure your child is dressed for the colder weather. Students will go outside (whenever the temperature allows) during the winter months. Please be sure children have coats, hats, and gloves (snowpants and boots if they want to play in the snow). Students are not allowed to stay inside unless there is an official note from the doctor. Therefore, please be sure that students are dress for the weather conditions.

KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP!!!
Now is the time to start planning for next year’s kindergarten students. We are now gathering the names of children that will be attending Kindergarten at Handley School in the fall of 2013. Children that are 5 years old by August 1, 2013, may enroll for Kindergarten. If you know of a child in the Handley district that will be in Kindergarten, please share the information below.

KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP:
Enrollment night will be on Tuesday, March 6, at 6:00 p.m. Come meet the teachers and complete registration papers. You must bring the following: proof of residence, child’s birth certificate, immunization record. For questions, please call the office at 362-2561.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE
Research shows that good attendance is important in order for students to be successful. When a student is not in class, even if he/she “makes up” the work, there is a negative impact on learning. The teacher uses examples and models processes/strategies that benefit students and can’t be duplicated with just paper and pencil. Below is a list of students that were present EVERY DAY during the 2nd grading period (Oct.22-Jan 11). Students that have a star by their name have been present EVERY DAY, ALL YEAR!!! Way to go!!!
