Lori Haas and Amber Haworth had strong showings at the No. 1 and 2 slots to lead the Purdue University Calumet women’s tennis team in a 6-3 nonleague setback at North Central College Friday.
Haas (Bismarck, Ill./Bismarck-Henning) and Haworth (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) picked up the Peregrines’ (2-2) lone win at doubles and both won at singles to score the squad’s three points in the road contest.
At No. 1 singles, Haas won in straight sets over NCC’s (9-4) Katie Drone, 6-1, 6-2; while Haworth picked up a convincing straight set victory at the No. 2 singles spot, beating Miranda Grizaffi, 6-0, 6-0.
At the top doubles spot, the pair grinded out a back-and-forth match with NCC’s Kelsey Forkin and Reynolds Cross, edging the host by a 9-7 margin.
Purdue Calumet freshman Abby Kvachkoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) put up a fight in a loss at No. 4 singles, losing the first set to Cross 3-6, but responding with a 6-1 win in Set 2. Cross came out on top in the marathon tiebreaker set, 11-9.
The Peregrines have a quick turnaround, as they play host to nonleague foe Adrian College (Mich.) today beginning at 11 a.m. at Highland High School.
