Region Sports Update

The Region is filled with amazing athletes across the board, but here are a couple I would like to highlight this week!

One of the biggest factors in basketball is the ability to shoot three pointers at a high level. For the Merrillville Pirates Boys basketball team, they are in good hands as Preston Saia averages 4.2 three pointers per game while shooting 52% from the three point line.

On the other side of the ball, Portage’s Small Forward, Michael Wellman, averages a block per game. This is on a small sample size as Wellman has only played in six games, but he is on pace for a great season on the defensive side of the ball. Wellman also added a highlight last weekend at the Fishers Holiday Classic with a buzzer-beating three-pointer against Evansville Bosse.

Next Week in Sports

On Tuesday, January 2, The (13-3) New Prairie Girls Basketball team hosts the (11-5) Penn Girls in what should be a competitive ball game.

On Friday, January 5, The (9-3) Valparaiso Vikings Boys Basketball team travels to Portage to play the (6-3) Portage Indians. The Indians look to stay undefeated on their home court and both teams are looking to get a fast start in conference play.

The (2-12) Michigan City Wolves Girls Basketball team hosts the (10-8) Crown Point Bulldogs. The Wolves look to win their first conference game of the season.

The (5-4) Michigan City Wolves Boys basketball team hosts the (6-3) Crown Point Bulldogs in a conference matchup that should be a close matchup. The Wolves average 64 points per game. The Bulldogs average 54 points per game, and defense could play a huge role in this matchup down the stretch.
