General Insurance Services (GIS) has been serving Northwest Indiana’s insurance needs for over 80 years. If there is one thing that has been consistent for the company, it’s growth.
“We’ve hired about 10 new employees already this year,” said Kara Moon, Marketing and Recruiting Coordinator at GIS. “After adding an office in Hobart last year, we’ve started focusing on finding the right people to help us build our presence in the Hobart community.”
GIS is currently looking to fill a Sales Account Executive role for their Personal Lines department. This individual would be based out of the Hobart office and would advise clients on their homeowners and auto insurance policies.
“All of our open positions are listed on our website, and we add new openings all the time,” said Moon.
Earlier this year, General Insurance Services was proud to announce their third year reigning as one of the “Best Places to Work in Indiana” by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. Only 125 businesses in the state received this honor.
“When we started participating in the ‘Best Places to Work’ program, while we were thrilled to be named to the list, we were most excited about the data we received,” said Moon. “It allowed us to see how we compared to other organizations, but also recognize areas of improvement identified by our employees.”
The Indiana Chamber of Commerce, along with the Best Companies Group, conducts a thorough assessment designed to gather detailed information about the workplace. It consists of an in-depth questionnaire completed by the employer, but also give employees the opportunity to offer honest feedback by taking part in the company-wide survey. The questions are categorized by 8 core focus areas including Leadership, Corporate Culture, and Training.
“Culture is very important to us. We are continually working to create a values-based, high performance culture at GIS. It’s great to see the validation that we are doing the right things and attracting the right people.”
The creation of the “GIS Way,” 31 fundamentals that help define their culture, has been an integral part of driving their success.
Nicole Van Duyn, Commercial Account Executive in the Hobart office, said, “The entire team at GIS inspires me by living the “GIS Way”, which are 31 different reminders on how to be your best and to do what is right as a team and as an individual in both to our work and personal lives,” Duyn said. “From day one, you’re welcomed as a member of the GIS family and everyone, regardless of their title or department, treats you as such, is genuinely happy to help, and is excited for your future with the company.”
“I hear from applicants all the time that being named a ‘Best Place to Work’ and seeing the GIS Way on our website is what attracted them to apply with us,” Moon said. “That speaks a lot about who we are as a company.”
Moon has been with GIS for the past three years and anticipates staying planted there.
“You know in today’s society, especially as a millennial, you don’t see longevity with companies like you used to. Personally, I see a career with GIS and I see it in the people I work with as well. For that, I’m extremely fortunate.”
