Get Your Home Winter-Ready and Save Energy

NIPSCO-WinterAs we are in the full swing of winter, here are some energy-saving tips to keep your home warm and efficient during the cold months!

1. Change your filter. Have your heating system checked before each heating season and replace filters. Change the filters often throughout the season, as dirty filters block the flow of air.

2. Install a programmable thermostat to save energy while you’re away from home, and bring the home temperature to a comfortable level by the time you return. Learn how to reduce your energy use through this video!

3. Make sure your home is well-insulated. Focus on sealing ducts that run through the attic, crawlspace, unheated basement, or garage. Check out this guide to sealing and insulating from ENERGY STAR. And check out insulation and duct sealing rebates here, where you can earn rebates up to $450!

4. Replace your old furnace. If you are in the market for a new furnace, make sure you purchase a high efficiency model. Click here for rebates offered on furnace purchases!

5. Have a Residential Home Energy Assessment performed by Energizing Indiana. This assessment will analyze your energy use, determine appropriate weatherization measures, and facilitate the direct installation of specific low-cost energy-saving measures.

6. During the winter, keep the thermostat set to 65 F, or two to four degrees below what you’re used to, and wear heavier clothing.

7. Use storm windows and doors, or sheets of clear plastic to help prevent heat loss in the winter.
