General Insurance Services’ Matt Weber makes a difference in the community

General Insurance Services (GIS) Strategic Account Executive Matt Weber believes in getting involved in and giving back to his community wherever he lives and works. Originally from Fort Wayne, he met his wife Lindsey while studying at Purdue University. Through their long-distance relationship, he got to experience the natural beauty where his wife was born and raised in Northern Indiana.

After the couple married, they settled in Trail Creek in La Porte County. That is when Weber began to live out his philosophy of sharing his talents to better his community.

“I moved to the area six years ago,” Weber said. “It’s great to experience all four seasons here. I enjoy being at the beach in the summertime, skiing in the winter, and, when I can, golfing. I also am a member of the Long Beach Volunteer Fire Department and get to volunteer with a great group of men and women who are proud to serve their community.”

When he first moved here, Weber was encouraged by his sister-in-law to attend an event hosted by the Lakefront Career Network, or LCN. The network was established to provide opportunities for young professionals to grow professionally and succeed in business while enhancing the community’s quality of life. At the event, Weber met someone from GIS. They began talking and, shortly thereafter, Weber found himself with a job at GIS.

“This year (2023) marks my sixth year with GIS,” Weber said. “I work in the Commercial Lines department as a strategic account executive. I work on larger commercial accounts that need and can benefit from proactive risk management and goals. The most meaningful work for these clients is done outside of the traditional insurance renewal cycle. I work with them to identify, set, and achieve strategic goals that can have a positive impact not only at renewal time but on the future of the business as a whole.”

Helping to secure the future of the communities it serves is the mission of GIS. That means recruiting associates who embrace the ‘GIS Way,’ which includes 33 fundamentals of driving excellence in team culture. These translate into being exceptional leaders in their company and community alike.

“We give them time off in the community to go do the things that they want,” said Stephanie Domazet, GIS vice president of personal line sales.

Weber said that working at GIS has enabled him to continue to be involved with LCN.

The network has grown over the years to offer a variety of opportunities for young professionals to connect and be involved with their Northern Indiana community.

“What started as a group of people organizing after-hour meetups has evolved into being a committee of the Michigan City Chamber of Commerce,” Weber said. “While still offering these similar networking meetups, there are also professional development events as well as an annual partnership with a local non-profit to assist them with their mission and goals.”

“GIS’ mission statement, ‘securing the future of the communities we serve,’ is the cornerstone of the company’s culture,” he added “There is an authenticity to it that has been built up and lived out over many years and encourages employees to give back how they can.”

“GIS is an independent community agency, with various departments and services that partners with everyone from small businesses to local governments,” Weber said. “Our top priority is always to do what’s best for the client which, in turn, is usually what’s best for the communities they live and do business in.”

After chairing or co-chairing the LCN for a handful of years, Weber has stepped down as of the first of this year to find new opportunities to make a difference in his community.

“I will continue to support and attend LCN events, but feel there are others greatly suited to step up on the committee and continue the organization’s work,” he said. “The new co-chairs for LCN are Jeremy Rossi from Uptown Social and Amber Terry from We Connect and Goodwill Industries.”

Membership in LCN is open to any person who lives, learns, works, or is active in the Michigan City area. LCN serves individuals ages 21-45, but no one is excluded from participating.
