Franciscan-St-Anthony-Health-Michigan-City-Hospital-Construction-on-Schedule“The work on the $233 million project at the nearly 90-acre site at Interstate 94 and U.S. 421 is on track, with a September 2018 completion date as the goal,” said hospital president and CEO, Dean Mazzoni.

Excavation work and foundation preparation are under way; the basements are being dug out, among other progress. The needed components to support the facility and being put in.

The hospital will offer the same services, and more, as the current, 100-year-old-plus community cornerstone on Homer Street.

“The Emergency Department will be bigger with and more treatment rooms and an improved layout for patient care,” Mazzoni said.

Other improvements include a 10-bed clinical decision-making unit, adjacent to the Emergency Department.

“The new Franciscan St. Anthony Health Hospital will offer 108 private inpatient beds,” said Mazzoni. “And [it] will provide the full array of award-winning care and technological services, and advances to which our patients have become accustomed.”

A larger Intensive Care Unit will offer 16 beds, with another four in the Immediate Care Unit. There also will be more operating rooms and two new catheterization labs, all of which will have new equipment. Another 34 beds will be retained at the current hospital site for the inpatient behavioral health and rehabilitation units.

Besides the units that will remain at the current location, discussions are under way about other uses for the vacated space, once the move takes place. Mazzoni said, “there has been a lot of interest in that regard.”
