Leah Gouwens, left, of Demotte, and Vincent Renta, of Crown Point, were the latest winners of the annual Franciscan St. Anthony Health-Crown Point Health Provider Scholarships, which provide each recipient $1,000 to be used toward medical career pursuits. Renta is a junior at Loyola University in Chicago, where he is studying to become a surgeon. Gouwens is a senior at Kankakee Valley High School and plans to attend Indiana University also to pursue surgical studies.
They are shown with Kristine Teodori, MD, who presented the awards at a recent medical staff meeting. Applicants must be from within the Franciscan St. Anthony primary service area (southern Lake, Porter, northern Jasper and northern Newton counties), and must be enrolling in a health care-related field. To apply, candidates provide their GPA, SAT scores, extracurricular activities and work history, and answer a series of questions about why they have chosen their career path, the events in their life that have shaped their decision, and why they deserve the scholarship. A group of physicians reviews the applications and chooses the winners.
