Members of the media are invited to the first of a series of classes on preparing healthy meals being held in a new mobile kitchen facility that was made possible by a grant from the Duneland Health Council.
Weather permitting, Chef Erik Tannehill will present the 45- to 60-minute class at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 at the Walker Park Community Garden at 900 Walker Street. Chef Tannehill will be taking produce out of the garden and preparing a meal. Attendees will receive an Aldi gift card and shopping list to purchase the ingredients to prepare the meal at home. The first class of 10 participants has been filled.
The project is an outgrowth of the community garden project in Michigan City’s Eastport neighborhood. Franciscan Health Michigan City is a key sponsor of the effort to help limited-income families eat healthier, done in conjunction with Purdue Extension and local community organizations. The 24-bed garden includes eight U-pick beds for residents. The land for the garden is donated by the Michigan City Parks Department.
The mobile kitchen facility that will be used for the classes was purchased by the Franciscan Health Foundation with a $5,000 grant from the Duneland Health Council. Four additional classes will take place on Thursdays, weather permitting.
