Focus on the Future Keeps Michigan City Girls Track Going Strong

The Michigan City Girls’ Track Team has had a rocky season, but that does not stop the team from keeping a positive attitude and looking towards the future. The team is extremely young with only one senior and an abundance of freshmen. Therefore, the team has switched gears and is focusing on rebuilding.

Assistant coach Philomena Hannon explained, “There are more freshmen than anything so it is a learning experience. We have to build off this year in order to succeed next year.”

Fortunately, the Wolves have talented underclassmen that are already making noise. The team has a strong group of girls running hurdles and sprints. The team currently lacks distance runners which are needed to round out the blossoming team.

In past years, the Wolves have been a fairly competitive team within the conference. They usually have depth and all-around talent. However, this year was a shift with only twenty-six girls on the team with little experience.

“I feel if the twenty-six girls give it everything that they have and put their heart into it, then we will be that much better. We have to build off the young team...This is all new to them.”

The coaches are looking to make up for what middle school track often lacks-which is rigorous training. As the underclassmen delve deeper into the fundamentals of the events and themselves, the team will expect to see improvements.

The Wolves are looking to finish off the season as strong as possible and give a great send off to sole senior Rosilynd Washington. The team will begin the post season run with sectionals next week. Next year, the team hopes to return with larger numbers and a group of experienced runners.

Rosilynd Washington
Event: 4 by 1 relay, 100 meter dash, and long jump
Looking back on the season: “This was my first year in track. It has been quite the experience. I left tennis to come to track. This season has been a great learning experience.
Post season plans: “I plan to take my young team past sectionals and regionals to state. We have a team made primarily of sophomores, so we are working into developing a better team. This has been a rebuilding season.”
Preparing for the future: “Through doing track I have gotten more prepared for going to the Marines. It has been about building my endurance and strength up.”
