First Friday for April 2016 Will Focus on Art

ssaa-first-friday-apr-2016The galleries and merchants of the Uptown Arts District in Michigan City are continuing the First Friday tradition on First Friday April 1, from 5pm (CST) until 8pm or later. In addition to the list below several other venues and restaurants will be open.

The Lubeznik Center for the Arts (101W 2nd street) is presenting “Poetry Slam” – Hosted by J.W. Baz, a tournament style event to elect the “Poetry Slam Champion”. Poets must register by contacting Janet Bloch at 219-874-4900 or jbloch@lubeznikcenter.org  with contact information.

The Down Gallery (525 Franklin) a Contemporary Art Gallery opens with its first group exhibit “STRUCTURE”. Artists include: Chicago's Assemblage Artist Mathias Spider Schergen and Chicago's Installation Costume Designer Sandra Leonard - Cheryl Dudek, Holly Donovan and Stained Glass Artist Mary Szmczak.

FADA! (617 Franklin) will be featuring Linda Mickevicius of Beach Bum Jewels with one-of-a-kind beach glass jewelry.

The Southern Shore Art Gallery (724 Franklin) is featuring Jeffrey Baumgartner in a solo exhibition "Retro-Perspective: Plein Air and Figurative Works" with over fifty of his original artworks.

Prince Galleries (726 Franklin) offers an eclectic collection of fine art: Original paintings from traditional to contemporary, prints, sculpture, jewelry and much more.

The Nest (803 Franklin) is featuring “Glass Works” by Robin Kittleson.

Blink Contemporary Art Gallery (1709 Franklin), while not officially in the Uptown Arts District is an important part of the Michigan City Art Scene. Blink presents: ONE A DAY! 12 regional painters, sculptors, designers & photographers have taken on the challenge to do a work of art every day since January 1, 2016. Come and see the results.

Also open in the district are Darling (418 Franklin) with new jewelry by Claudia Darak, Revive Consignments (523 Franklin) featuring Bobbi Laughlin window art and The Crib (11E 6th street), Revive’s Little Shop around the corner with children’s consignment.

Urban Soles (624 Franklin) is celebrating their 5th birthday and featuring handcrafted jewelry by Gayle Godsey. Paris House of Bridal offers the largest selection of formal wear in the Midwest and dh2w Architecture will be open for those interested in learning from resident architect Roger Potratz what an architect does.

Michigan City Main Street Community Event
7th Street will be closed just West of Franklin and the Michigan City Main Street Association has organized fun things to do for kids during this April’s First Friday from 5-8pm: The Dunes Learning Center invites all kids to stop by their tent and participate in creating an art project. Safe Harbor is inviting kids to show their drawing talents with sidewalk chalk art.
