Figure Drawing Workshop at the Southern Shore Art Gallery on Sunday March 15, 2015

Southern-Shore-Art-AssociationA free Female Figure Drawing Workshop with a live artist's model will be offered at the SSAA Gallery in Michigan City on Sunday, March 15 as a part of the March exhibition “HERSELF” The Female in Image and Form. “The Gallery will remain open during the event, providing a special opportunity for exhibition visitors to see artists at work”, said Susan Block, Exhibition Chair. The workshop is offered by the Southern Shore Art Association in collaboration with the Dunes Arts Foundation.

From 1-2pm (CT) guidance in basic sketching techniques will be led by practicing artist Michael Koss, followed by a structured drawing workshop from 2-4pm, led by Matthew Kubik and Koss, both Board members of SSAA. They will be available during the workshop to provide drawing principles and critiques..

“The Figure Drawing Workshop is offered at no charge to the public and open to all artists from beginners to the well-established”, said Kubik, Purdue University Professor Emeritus. “This workshop is made available to further the SSAA's mission to support regional member and guest artists through exhibitions and a year-round roster of art education classes in various media.”

“Pre-workshop instruction will focus on techniques to help the artist become more observant through the use of the intuitive right side of the brain. The left side of the brain rules because it is more structured. By training the right side of the brain you can become an artist. Once you can draw the body, it seems you are able to draw most anything,” explained Kubik.

The structured workshop begins with short quick poses progressing to longer poses. Artists are encouraged to bring their own sketch pads, pencils and other drawing utensils. Paints or other wet media will not be allowed. Basic soft pencils and brown paper will be available for beginners.

Drawing space is limited, so advance registration is required at the Gallery which is located at 724 Franklin St. with open hours Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, noon – 5pm or by calling (219) 879-4980.
