A.K. Smith Career Center and the Michigan City Commission for Women recently hosted the N.E.W. Opportunities Workshop for eighth grade girls on October 29, 2014.
Twenty-one lucky girls from Boston Middle School attended the workshop and had an opportunity to learn about many “non-traditional” careers available to women, such as welding, firefighting, EMT, engineering, and machinery.
They also were able to tour A.K. Smith and participate in many of the programs by fixing a circuit, creating a wooden game, and even welding a snowman.
The students left with new knowledge of interesting potential careers and an appreciation for the women who hold these jobs.
