Fazekas, Popplewell Earn IBCA Honors

ibca-logoMarquette Catholic High School's Ryan Fazekas was named the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA)/Subway Player of the Week in District 1 for the week of February 3-8 and Riley Popplewell of South Central was named the girls basketball player of the week in District 1.

Fazekas, a 6-8 wing, produced 26 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and no turnovers as Marquette Catholic outlasted Gary Wallace 98-93 in its only game of the week. Fazekas converted 9-of-15 shots, including 5-of-6 3-pointers, plus three free throws as the Blazers improved to 10-6.

Popplewell garnered girls' District 1 accolades after propelling South Central (Union Mills) to a 2-1 week with averages of 18.0 points, 16.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 3.0 steals and 5.0 blocks. The 5-10 forward opened her week with 21 points, 22 rebounds, four assists, three steals and four blocks in a 76-55 setback to Oregon-Davis. She followed with 23 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, four steals and seven blocks in a 70-38 win over Morgan Township. Popplewell completed her week with 14 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and four blocks in a 65-25 victory over Boone Grove.

Area athletes nominated for the boys' award included Brandon Adkins (Washington Township), Chase Braden (Morgan Township), Bryce Hanaway (Hebron) and Keenan Simmons (Michigan City).

Area athletes nominated for the girls' award included Jordan Cole (Munster), Caroline Puntillo (Chesterton) and Grayce Roach (Hobart).
