Edgewood Elementary School teacher Patrice Huley has been selected as a 2021-22 Armstrong Teacher Educator for the Indiana University School of Education.
IU’s Armstrong Educator program recognizes outstanding teachers from across Indiana, providing them with a variety of interactions with education faculty and students at the IU Bloomington campus. IU students also visit Armstrong teacher classrooms to observe and learn.
Huley is the first educator from Michigan City to be selected for the program. She was honored on April 15 during a virtual Celebration of Teaching announcing this year’s Armstrong Teachers. She will also receive an honorarium and will take part in two panel discussions at the School of Education during the 2021-22 academic year.
Selection for the prestigious program is based on recommendations from administrators and peers, an application, and a video submission explaining the candidate’s teaching methods and philosophy.
In her video, Huley highlighted the equity focus in her classroom, emphasizing that students are expected to be leaders of their own learning.
“I never imagined that I would be selected for this award, as I feel I am always learning and growing,” said Huley. “I am grateful that the committee and our district leadership felt I was deserving of this.”
Huley began her career with Michigan City Area Schools seven years ago as an Instructional Assistant at Edgewood. She has been teaching fourth grade at the school for the past five years, and is currently a fourth-grade teacher leader for the district.
