The Economic Development Corporation Michigan City (EDCMC) is hosting a free tax abatement workshop on March 11, 2015 beginning at 8:30-11:30 am.
This course is a 2 ½ hour presentation that covers how the designating body and the taxpayer establish an abatement, how the taxpayer claims the deduction, how the local officials review the deduction, common problems, and options to consider for solving those problems. It’s designed to take participants through the abatement process from start to finish. Those would find the program interesting would include: the County Auditor and staff, the County & Township Assessors and staff, the designating bodies, economic development personnel, mayors, town clerks, accountants, lawyers, and businesses interested in learning more about the deduction.
The information will be presented by Steve McKinney who has worked for the Department of Local Government Finance for 35 years and is the field representative for the Northwest district, a 16-county territory which includes LaPorte County. He teaches the abatement classes at both the County Assessor’s Conference and the County Auditor’s Conference as well as to individual counties such as this course.
The event will take place at Blue Chip Casino Hotel & Spa in Sam’s Town Room A, 777 Blue Chip Drive, Michigan City, IN. Light refreshments will be provided.
