East Chicago Students to Participate in eMission Program

rot7aFourth grade students in East Chicago are testing their math, science, communications, problem-solving and teamwork skills during a simulated mission presented by Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana.

The program, called eMission: Moon, Mars and Beyond, uses video conferencing technology to connect to a classroom anywhere and give students the opportunity to see their skills in action and use it to rescue a crew of lost astronauts in the year 2080. The programs are being sponsored by ArcelorMittal for all 4th grade students in East Chicago and the teachers there are utilizing the curriculum and eMission to excite their students about science, technology, engineering and math.

“We want the students to see the connection between what they’re learning and how it can be used in a real-life, on-the-job setting,” said Becky Manis, Executive Director of Challenger Learning Center. “That’s what all Challenger programs work toward - inspiring and engaging students to think about their future and potential careers that will affect all of us. It’s never too early to begin that level of workforce development!”

Harrison Elementary began the program on Tuesday, May 20, and will continue Wednesday, May 21. Lincoln Elementary will do the program May 22 and May 23 and McKinley Elementary will participate in the program May 27 through May 29.
