In celebration of Older Americans Month, CoAction is proud to announce its official designation as a Dementia Friendly Organization, the first in Lake County and Area 1 to receive this recognition through the Dementia Friendly Indiana Communities initiative, supported by the Indiana University Health Foundation.
This milestone honors CoAction’s long-standing commitment to serving older adults across Northwest Indiana and reflects its ongoing efforts to create a region where older individuals, including those living with dementia, can age with dignity, connection, and confidence.
“Older Americans Month reminds us how vital it is to build communities that honor aging in all its forms,” said Jen Trowbridge, CEO of CoAction. “Becoming dementia friendly shows our commitment to that vision to meeting people where they are with respect, empathy, and real support.”
The designation was led by Jenna Turner, CoAction’s Dementia Outreach Specialist, whose leadership guided staff across housing, aging, and energy assistance programs through specialized training. This person-centered training empowers staff to recognize signs of memory loss, communicate more effectively, and support clients and families navigating cognitive changes.
“It’s more than a training it’s a mindset,” said Turner. “We’re proud to be part of a growing movement that centers compassion, understanding, and the lived experiences of older adults and their caregivers.”
Through more than 35 programs including meal delivery, caregiver support, transportation, and dementia outreach CoAction helps older adults remain independent, safe, and connected.“This recognition reflects the way our team is always looking for ways to go further for older adults in our region,” said Brian Matthews, Director of Aging Services. “We want people living with dementia and their families to feel seen, supported, and valued in every interaction they have with us.”
