Duane Harrigan Honored with Michigan City Rotary Firefighter “Service Above Self” Award

The Rotary Club of Michigan City congratulates Duane Harrigan who received the Rotary Firefighter Service Above Self award. This award is given in sincere appreciation and recognition for the service and loyalty that individuals have displayed towards the people of Michigan City.

As Firefighters their duty is to provide help for the community during crisis. The Michigan City Fire Department personnel are always available and stand ready for duty when called. Firefighters help to save the lives of the people here in Michigan City and dedicate their lives to the protection of life and property.

Today we recognize an individual who is recognized for providing service far beyond the requirements of the position. Driver Operator Harrigan started with the Fire Department in 2007 and prior to the Fire Department he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Aviation from Lewis University.

Duane joined the United States Air Force in 2003 and is a member of the reserve unit currently as a pilot on the KC-135, in-flight refueling aircraft. Duane has over 2500 flight hours and flown over 800 missions. When Duane was asked why he wanted to become a firefighter he responded" The events of September 11, 2001 created a strong desire/calling to serve and work in a field that would help prevent an event like that from happening again".

On the Fire Department, Duane stays active learning new ways to improve his fire-fighting skills and mentoring younger firefighters. Congratulations to Duane for this outstanding achievement.

The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders regardless of race, religion, gender, or political preference.

The principal motto of Rotary is Service above Self, since it best explains the philosophy of unselfish dedication to service to others.
