Deadline for Seniors 60 & Older to Register for Purdue Calumet Free Functional Fitness Tests May 22, 2015

purdue-cal-peregrenePurdue University Calumet celebrates National Senior Health & Fitness Day for individuals 60 and older Wednesday, May 27 by providing functional fitness testing, a functional fitness class and a sensory loss lecture in the university’s Fitness & Recreation Center.

Functional fitness testing measures physical attributes needed to perform normal activities of daily living. The tests, administered by staff members of Purdue Calumet’s Fitness Center, entail six activities that test lower body strength, upper body strength, lower body flexibility, upper body flexibility, agility and cardiovascular fitness.

Free testing requires pre-registration
The testing is free, but pre-registration is required by phoning the Fitness Center at 219/989-2175 by 5 p.m., Friday, May 22.

Functional fitness testing scheduled May 27 takes place between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the gymnasium, located in the Fitness & Recreation Center, at the south end of campus, 2300 173rd Street. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and gym shoes.

Functional fitness class, sensory loss lecture
Additionally, a 30-minute, functional fitness class is scheduled at 10 a.m. in the Group Exercise Room of the Fitness & Recreation Center. Subsequently, at 10:45 a.m., extension educator Linda Curley will deliver a 45-minute sensory loss lecture.

Purdue Calumet’s Fitness Center, also located in the Fitness & Recreation Center, is a comprehensive exercise and workout facility available to community residents, students, faculty and staff. It is supervised by a staff of exercise physiologists and specialists. The Fitness Center also serves as a lab facility for Purdue Calumet fitness management student majors.
