Deadline for Emergency Food and Shelter Program Funds is December 31st

united-way-laporte-countyThe LaPorte County FEMA Board in partnership with United Way of LaPorte County has announced that December 31, 2012 is the deadline for county agencies to submit an application for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds. To qualify, agencies must:

  • Be private voluntary non-profits or units of government;
  • Have an accounting system;
  • Practice non-discrimination;
  • Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs;
  • If they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board.

The program was created by Congress to help meet the needs of hungry and homeless people throughout the United States and its territories by allocating federal funds for the provision of food and shelter.

$73,484 dollars are available for LaPorte County.

Program funds are used to provide the following, as determined by the Local Board in funded jurisdictions:

  • Food, in the form of served meals or groceries.
  • Lodging in a mass shelter or hotel.
  • One month's rent or mortgage payment.
  • One month's utility bill.
  • Equipment necessary to feed or shelter people, up to a $300 limit per item.
