On Friday, July 21, Currie Motors Ford of Valpo held their fourth and final Cruising Downtown Valparaiso event for the summer.
Many car lovers throughout the area gathered together to talk with one another, share insight and admire different cars at the event. Food was also provided at the event by Rudy’s BBQ and Big D’s Phillys. The event was covered on X-Rock radio station.
Lily Considine, Currie Motors Ford of Valpo, has always found excitement in these events and the impact it has left on car enthusiasts in the Region.
“These events are really about trying to bring the community together and find a common ground,” Lily said. “It’s always nice to see a lot of great people come to the events that are passionate about cars, the new and the old. It means a lot to us as well.”
While Currie Motors has hosted this event biweekly across four Fridays this summer, that hasn’t stopped some people from coming to multiple events to meet new faces. Ed Purcell has been to a plethora of car events and continues to enjoy the overall atmosphere.
“This is my third time coming to the Valpo cruise night event this summer,” Purcell said. “I enjoy listening to the old timers at the events to try and get some new ideas every day. It’s also nice to see the younger generation showing out and overall it makes for a very positive event every time.”
The range gap between new and old vehicles caught the eyes of many attendees at the event. Doug Goodwin was representing the latter class, as he displayed his dark blue 1950 Chevy 3100.
“I’ve had this car for about 19 years,” Goodwin said. “It took me a year to build it before I started taking it to car shows and other events. I even took it down to Louisville five times.”
Goodwin also believes that the secret to what keeps people enticed with his vehicle is that the dark blue color is the original paint.
“I got the car on eBay,” Goodwin said. “It was originally a farm truck in Idaho. My friends would always give me ideas on how I should paint it, but I told myself that I had no plans in doing so. I just try to keep it in as good of a condition as I can.”
However, some old car enthusiasts at the event are open to a fresh paint style. That includes Robert Hyndman, who painted his light blue 1951 MG TD himself.
“The car was made in England,” Hyndman said. “I bought it in 1984 so I could put it together. I’ll usually drive it after the first couple of rainy days in the year until it starts snowing and they’re pouring salt on the roads for the winter season.”
From the smells of paint and rust to the sounds of new and old engines, car lovers were provided a unique experience at Cruising Downtown Valparaiso.
