Colin Roberts of Boston Middle School Receives La Lumiere School’s Third Annual Excellence in Teaching Award

Colin-Roberts-and-Michael-KennedyLa Lumiere School is devoted to helping students thrive and to making the classroom a place of discovery. Students from northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan in grades sixth, seventh and eighth submitted nominations for teachers they believe have the attributes of an excellent educator. Over the past three years, over 140 essays have been submitted from 15 different schools across five counties.

This year we are pleased to announce Mr. Colin Roberts of Boston Middle School in La Porte is the winner of the Third Annual Excellence in Teaching Award. Mr. Roberts will receive dinner and a movie for two, every month for the school year. “What a wonderful surprise to receive the Excellence in Teaching Award from La Lumiere School,” Roberts said. “There is no specific formula that makes someone an excellent teacher -- it's not that simple. Rather, I believe it is the people that we come in contact with on a daily basis that makes us who we are. Luckily for me, I am privileged to be surrounded with excellent staff and amazing students, and I feel that they continue to make me a better teacher every day.”

Mrs. Deborah Carter, Boston Middle School principal, shared, “Teachers are not honored enough. I am blessed to have two recipients of La Lumiere School’s Excellence in Teaching Award on my staff. Mrs. Bonnie DeWolf and Mr. Colin Roberts, both master teachers, have captured the art and craft of teaching.”

Boston Middle School graduate Rowena Quinn nominated Mr. Roberts. In her essay, Rowena described her eighth grade experience in Mr. Robert’s class, “We didn’t just learn certain life lessons; we learned why those lessons are relevant today.”

La Lumiere Headmaster Michael Kennedy commented, “As a leader in college-preparatory education in the Midwest, La Lumiere is fortunate to have outstanding teachers on our campus and thus we acknowledge those great teachers in our students’ communities. La Lumiere provides an unparalleled educational experience both in and out of the classroom – we are delighted to shine a light on excellent teachers such as Boston Middle School’s Mr. Roberts.”

La Lumiere takes pride in offering local students an opportunity to express their gratitude to those teachers who make a difference. La Lumiere School would like to thank the following sponsors who joined La Lumiere in honoring this outstanding teacher: AMC Theatres, Bartlett’s Gourmet Grill, Bentwood Tavern, The Carriage House, Trattoria Enzo, Fiddler’s Hearth, Heston Supper Club, Jimmy’s, Redamak’s and Red Arrow Road House.
