CoAction Charts New Course for Housing Innovation with Plans to Sell Valparaiso Facility

CoAction, a trusted for-purpose organization dedicated to housing stability and community well-being, is taking a significant step toward its long-term vision by announcing plans to sell its Valparaiso Housing Office. The organization would still operate numerous locations throughout Northwest Indiana, including several in Valparaiso.

The move reflects a bold shift in strategy to better serve Northwest Indiana through expanded housing efforts and a renewed focus on prevention-first solutions.

“This is more than a building transition; it’s an opportunity to reshape how we support families and individuals across Northwest Indiana,” said Jen Trowbridge, CEO of CoAction. “We’re investing in smarter, more sustainable solutions that will help prevent people from experiencing homelessness in the first place. This will allow them to not just survive, but truly thrive.”

The sale decision stems from years of extensive planning and analysis. While the building has served CoAction’s mission for many years, rising operating costs and aging infrastructure have made it increasingly challenging to maintain.

Rather than investing $5 million in renovations to a space with limited capacity, CoAction is redirecting its efforts toward new, modern housing that better reflects the evolving needs of Northwest Indiana.

“We want to be clear: we are still committed to serve Valpo and its residents,” said Jordan Stanfill, CoAction’s Chief Housing Officer. “In addition to the Calumet Avenue site, we operate properties throughout Northwest Indiana, including in Portage, Valparaiso and Michigan City. This sale is about doing more not less for our communities. We are committed to expanding affordable housing and continuing to work closely with our local partners to make that happen.”

As part of this transition, CoAction is actively exploring land acquisition opportunities to develop new, high-quality housing units  The proceeds from the building’s sale will also be used to establish a more accessible and collaborative office space, intentionally designed to serve as a central hub for innovation, coordination, and client care. In alignment with its evolving mission. This decision is part of CoAction’s larger strategy to move services upstream investing in programs that prevent homelessness before it starts, rather than focusing solely on reactive support in time of crisis. The organization is currently supporting more than 1,000 families in NWI in stable housing and is working with many more to find long-term solutions.

This reflects a broader vision: creating systems that keep people housed, not waiting until a crisis occurs. There is no confirmed buyer or firm timeline for the sale, and the transition will happen gradually.

“We’re proud to be evolving with purpose,” said Jordan Stanfill, CoAction’s Chief Housing Officer. “This decision allows us to expand access to safe, stable housing while shifting resources to the kinds of long-term, preventative solutions our communities need most.”
