Ivy Tech Community College Valparaiso Campus and Cleveland-Cliffs are announcing a partnership to introduce students to rewarding careers in the steel industry.
Cleveland-Cliffs, the largest flat-rolled steel producer in North America, has partnered with Ivy Tech as a source of skilled workers. Due to the pandemic, internship opportunities were suspended. The restart of this opportunity reflects the high need for a skilled workforce and shows employer and industry support for educational attainment as a pathway to the high-wage/high-demand jobs in the region.
The program focuses on a combination of academic achievement and internships, with work experiences coinciding with Ivy Tech’s academic calendar. This program is an application process, and students are paid during their internships.
Interested students would first enroll at Ivy Tech in the Technical Certificate Program in Industrial Technology Electrical. Students will complete courses such as basic electricity, advanced manufacturing technology, motors and motor controls, programmable automation controls, and industrial wiring. Students are eligible for consideration for a Cleveland-Cliffs internship after completing the first three core courses. Upon completion of internships and their technical certificate, students may be offered full-time employment.
“This proved to be an excellent realization of the vision of Ivy Tech’s Career Coaching and Employer Connections (CCEC): to connect students with major regional employers for practical, hands-on learning experiences,” shared Patti Shields, Executive Director, CCEC.
Ivy Tech student and Cleveland-Cliffs internship participant Jeremiah McKinney shared, “The internship really gives you a glimpse of what it will be like in the manufacturing field. On the ground. Hands-on. The hands-on experience is really eye-opening, and you get to meet a lot of people who can steer you in the right direction for your career. “
