City of La Porte Unveils New Propane-Powered Transit Vehicles

laporte-watertowerLa Porte, Ind.’s Mayor Blair Milo is pleased to announce the addition of two environmentally friendly transit vehicles to the city’s TransPorte demand/response public transportation service. The two new vehicles are powered by propane, a clean-burning fuel which will decrease tailpipe emissions resulting in fuel cost savings and reduced maintenance.

The new 15-passenger transit vehicles will be unveiled at a press conference on Thursday, May 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the city’s TransPorte building, 102 L St., La Porte, Ind.

Visitors are invited to come out to view the vehicles, and tour the TransPorte Building and operations.

The vehicles were funded in large part through Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant dollars with assistance from South Shore Clean Cities and the Northern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC). ROUSH CleanTech provided the technology for the propane conversion on the buses and Hoekstra Truck Equipment was the chassis provider.

La Porte will partner with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to use INDOT’s propane fueling station at the district office on Boyd Blvd. Through efforts like this, the city of La Porte continues to advance its Green Fleets program helping to improve the community’s air quality and reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign fuel.
