Transporte, the City’s wheels, will continue its free rides through the end of the month, according to Manager Beth West.
The transportation service began providing free rides for essential-only travel in March when the governor’s “stay-at-home” order was announced. After continued monitoring and consideration, West said Transporte has decided to continue providing free rides until June 1. She said the “essential travel only” rule will still apply.
“This is a very crazy and confusing time for everyone, and we at Transporte are constantly having to reevaluate our protocols as we work to protect our passengers and drivers,” West said. “We will continue to do our best to provide quality service to residents while also responsibly working to flatten the curve.”
Transporte’s temporary hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. West said the service will also have a couple of buses running on Memorial Day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
All rides must be scheduled through dispatch at 219-362-6565. For more information, contact West at 219-326-8274 or BWest@CityofLaPorteIN.gov.
